Lemonades – French, Italian, and English Craft Products

Not all lemonades are created equal. A true craft lemonade thrives on fruit, not flavor – and it comes from manufacturers who have nurtured their craft for generations. At genussland.de, you'll find classic French lemonades in flip-top bottles, organic Italian lemonades with a mineral water base, and English specialties – pure, full of character, and with a discernible origin.

What Defines a Craft Lemonade

A good lemonade combines three components: a real fruit content from juice or puree, a water base (mineral water, spring water, or soda water), and carbonation. The sugar content is adjusted depending on the style – subtly in a classic French lemonade, often a little sweeter in an Italian Aranciata. Craft producers generally forgo artificial flavors, colorings, and preservatives; in the organic lines, the ingredients are also from controlled organic farming.

Which Craft Producers You'll Find at genussland

La Mortuacienne from Morteau in Doubs is one of the few remaining French lemonade manufacturers with its own tradition. Their lemonades come in classic flip-top bottles – Lemonade Citron, Lemonade Orange, Lemonade Mandarine, Pampelmousse rose, Grenade, Cola, Apfel Gewürz, and Limonade Menthe-Citron. The "Limonade sans colorant" (Lemonade without coloring) variety is their house creation for enthusiasts who want to experience the original without additional ingredients.

Galvanina from Rimini, Italy, offers an organic lemonade line based on mineral water. The natural spring near San Marino gives the lemonade a slightly mineral character; the fruit components are pure (Bergamot, Pink Grapefruit, Chinotto, Orange, Lemon). Galvanina works exclusively with organic ingredients and is EU organic certified.

Lurisia from Roccaforte Mondovì in Piedmont is the Italian style icon among lemonades. The range of varieties includes Gazzosa (lemonade in the classic Piedmontese style), Aranciata Rossa (blood orange lemonade from Sicily), Aranciata Amara (bitter orange lemonade), and Chinotto (bitter orange lemonade from the fruit of the same name from the Ligurian coast).

Belvoir Fruit Farms from Leicestershire, England, complements the assortment with Mandarine-Cranberry-Lemonade – a specialty for the cold season.

What to Use These Lemonades For

• Pure and well-chilled as a non-alcoholic aperitif in summer
• As a mixer for non-alcoholic cocktails – Chinotto in a non-alcoholic Negroni, Pampelmousse in a Spritz
• As an accompaniment to cold appetizers and Mediterranean platters
• As a gift in a wicker basket – the flip-top bottles make an impression even without label maintenance
• As a summer supply in the refrigerator – chilled, the lemonades taste as they were intended

Frequently Asked Questions About Lemonades

What distinguishes a craft lemonade from an industrial lemonade?
Craft lemonades use real fruit juice or fruit puree, not artificial flavors. They generally forgo artificial colorings and preservatives. Additionally, the fruit content is often higher, and the sugar is more subtly dosed. In a direct comparison, you'll taste the difference from the first sip – a La Mortuacienne Citron is unmistakably lemon, a Galvanina Bergamot is unmistakably bergamot.

What is Chinotto?
Chinotto is the fruit of the Chinotto tree (Latin: Citrus myrtifolia), a small bitter orange variety grown primarily on the Ligurian coast around Savona. The fruit is too bitter for direct consumption but is excellent as a lemonade base. Its typical dark color and bittersweet taste are vaguely reminiscent of cola but are sensually much closer to a bitter almond note. Chinotto lemonades are available in our assortment from Galvanina (organic) and Lurisia.

Which lemonade pairs with which dish?
Thought purely by variety: A lemon lemonade (Lurisia Gazzosa, La Mortuacienne Citron) with cold appetizers or fish. A bitter orange lemonade (Lurisia Chinotto, Galvanina Chinotto) as an aperitif before the meal. A Mandarine-Cranberry (Belvoir) with game dishes in winter. A Pampelmousse or Aranciata Rossa with a summer buffet.

Are organic lemonades lower in sugar?
Not necessarily. Organic certification refers to the cultivation of the ingredients, not the sugar content. An organic lemonade can be just as sweet or subtle as a conventional one. At genussland.de, you'll find both classically sweet lemonades (Lurisia Aranciata Rossa) and very subtly dosed versions (La Mortuacienne Limonade sans colorant) – the sugar content is indicated on each product.
